NASPO Welcomes New Academic Partner

The National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) and George Washington Law (GW Law) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to foster and promote public procurement education together.  Dr. Karen Thornton, the Director of the GW Government Program Law Program, and Dianne Lancaster, NASPO Chief Learning Officer, are the representatives for each organization. Meet Your Future Workforce: 2019 NASPO Internship Program

By mid-September, our interns from NASPO academic partner schools completed their positions with 11 state procurement offices across the nation. This is the third year of the NASPO internship program, and largest pool of student interns to date. Sixteen students from academic partner schools worked in 11 central purchasing offices, from Alaska to Connecticut and Texas to Wisconsin.

NASPO Internship Program: A Model for Your State

This summer marks NASPO’s third iteration of the internship program, created in April 2017. We are pleased to report that we have now put more than thirty students through our program in thirteen different states. The interns from NASPO academic partner schools live in the cities where their internship is held during the summer and take part in public procurement projects. The NASPO internship program is just one way we are working to combat the workforce shortage so many of our states are facing. Are you interested in participating in an internship program? Workforce shortage? Have you considered emerging talent?

Many of our states have expressed concerns associated with their retirement-age workforce. Even more stress-inducing is not knowing where or how to recruit new talent to fill those gaps. As part of NASPO’s higher education initiatives, student recruitment at the college-level has been a priority. This emerging talent is oftentimes overlooked in the public sector, but NASPO is working to change that. Through our partnership with impressive colleges and universities across the country, we work to place these quality students in both internships and full-time positions within our state purchasing offices.
